About Me

I'm Victoria. I grew up in Iowa and am (and always will be) a lover of the Midwest. Life is good there and that is home.  But I have a wandering spirit and a love for travel and new experiences.  My hubby and I met in college, and when we started dating we quickly decided that we were in need of an adventure.  We used to spend every day together in a coffee shop, sipping coffee and dreaming of the places we wanted to go. We paged through travel magazines, we made lists of things we felt we needed to do.  We walked hand in hand outside for hours planning and playing out scenarios of our future adventures. We craved starting something new together.  After we were engaged and spring rolled around, we packed up our belongings (which was not much at the time) in the back of his subaru, along with our pup Finn and as much as we could stuff on a small trailer and dragged the load 3500 miles up to Alaska.  It was an amazing trip!  We found perfect jobs up here, which was very fortunate.  He works as an Environmental Scientist, and I work as a Birth Assistant for the greatest birth center/group of midwives ever. I'm convinced. We were married in the spring of 2010 and by July, we found out there was going to be a third person in our family.  Henry was born at the birth center where I work on March 31, 2011.  He is the undoubtedly the greatest thing to ever enter our lives.
It's extremely hard to be this far away from family and friends, but we have made a cozy life up here for now.  It's a constant balancing act, caring so deeply about our roots in the Midwest, and our wings up here on our own. I write a lot about that, mostly as a way of working through those feelings.
I started this blog as a way to update family and friends on the happenings up here as I'm so far away from home, but writing here became most important to me when I found out I was pregnant.  I love that parents all over the world can find each others blogs and share experiences, and mostly I love that some day, any day I choose, I can come here and reread the stories of my pregnancy, of motherhood, of the daily adventures of my little ones when the details escape my memory.  I want to remember every single bit of it all.

That is me, us, in a nutshell... for now... I mentioned I struggle between the desire to be rooted but also to wander so I know Alaska is not the last stop for us. There will be more adventures ahead, whether it's on to somewhere new or back to where we came from for the first time as a family.  It's bound to be an interesting ride.

  1. This is so funny! I linked to your blog from "my little loves" and and as soon as I read your "About Me" I knew just where you worked! (Don't freak out, my aunt works in your field as well and I live in Chugiak!) It's so wonder to read about your amazing experiences up here in the Alaskan wilderness (at least it seems that way to me: I grew up in Los Angeles!) with your guys. :)
